Karie and Chuck's Tabloid Fantasy League

What exactly is the 'Tabloid Fantasy League?"

KTAR's Chuck Powell explains...

Dear "other 49" states…

Perhaps you heard about our birthday today. We are 100- years-old! You must have heard about Arizona. The 48th State. We have beautiful weather and great scenery. Maybe you have even visited us!

You probably remember us from when we passed SB 1070 a while back - and we got a LOT of attention for it. The late night comedy shows killed us, conventions were pulled. Boycotts were organized. We were YOUR laughing stock.

Trust me, it was a divisive issue here too. We took sides. People got angry. A lot of Mexican-American residents here were FOR the new law, and took to the streets to support it. Others marched against it. There were Brown-outs, where Mexican workers were urged NOT to show up for work or buy products in stores, to highlight their importance to the economy. Families were reluctant to send their kids to school for fear they would be deported. The US Supreme Court is set to rule on some aspects of the law early this summer, and when that decision comes down, it will drive that wedge deeper between us all.

You might also have heard of Sheriff Joe…he gets national attention too. From the pink underwear to tent city and green baloney-- and most recently, immigration sweeps and jail policies that have gotten him in hot water with the feds.

Maybe you remember our governors… it's hard not to. Evan Mecham wanted to abolish MLK day and was impeached. Fife Symington was indicted and found guilty of fraud and had to leave office. Janet Napolitano left office midterm to take a spot running homeland security for Barack Obama. And a couple weeks ago Governor Brewer famously shook her finger at the president on the tarmac out in Mesa.

Maybe you saw us on the "Today Show" last week. An investigative reporter tried to buy guns over the internet, claiming he couldn't pass a required background check and might use the weapons to commit a crime. He was five-for-five in buying all kinds of weapons from Arizonans, from a handheld automatic to a small rocket launcher. The sales took place in Valley drug store parking lots.

We sure have our growing pains.

But before you judge us, remember, we're just a kid. We are a brand new state, full of pioneers who set out west in search of something better. We are independent thinkers. We are innovators and explorers. We love nature and value our privacy. And we hold tight to our rights.

We are Arizonans.

We are The Grand Canyon. We are Monument Valley and Karchner Caverns. We are Flagstaff, Sedona, Nogales, and Greer. We are Arizona Highways. We are Route 66.

We are Cowboys and Indians, Hispanics and Whites. We are on horseback and in race cars. We are farmers, ranchers, miners and dreamers.

We are Intel and Motorola. We are Raytheon, and Teva. We are ASU, U of A, and NAU. We are the Arizona Diamondbacks. We are Glenn Campbell, Emma Stone, Alice Cooper, Stevie Nicks, and the Gin Blossoms.

We are Barry Goldwater and William Rehnquist, Sandra Day O'Connor and John McCain. We are John Rhodes, Bruce Babbitt, Carl Hayden, and Morris Udall.

We are Lori Piestewa, Pat Tillman, and Gabrielle Giffords. We are 100 years old, and we are a state that is brimming with hope for the future. We are still learning, though, and we won't apologize for we are.

We are Arizonans. Watch us grow. Sincerely, #48

Karie Dozer:

Position: Co Host. Karie and Chuck, middays, female half!

Years with the company: Just started with Bonneville, but have worked for and with KTAR AM and FM since 1991.

Career: I always knew my career would be touched by news. I started as a news intern in 1991 and eventually reported news and sports, and anchored newscasts at KTAR when it was an AM, news/talk/sports station. I went to work at the Attorney General's Office in 1995, as a spokesperson for the 300 attorneys there, and for Attorney General Grant Woods. I returned as a part-time host and host of Arizona's Morning News Saturday in 2001.

More on what you do (at work): Chuck and I tend to find out what we want to talk about by finding what is funny or remarkable about a story. If it makes us laugh or surprises us, we will find a way to talk about it.

Education: I escaped Catholic school early when the nuns wanted me to skip the second grade. I found my independent voice at a private grade school in Painesville, Ohio, then called Phillips Elementary. The teachers there encouraged us to ask questions and challenge the status quo. They took us on mind-opening trips and never once treated us like children. I am grateful for those years! I left Ohio in 1988 to attend Arizona State University because I knew I wanted to live in the West. I majored in Journalism and interned at KTAR in the newsroom my senior year.

Family: I am the last of nine children and my parents were undoubtedly looking at retiring when I was born. I was raised early on mostly by my five wonderful sisters. I have so many first cousins that I haven't yet met most of them.

Favorite food: Italian with red wine. Bread of any kind. Cheese and Fruit!

Favorite spot in Arizona: Flagstaff

News memory that will stick with you forever: The OJ Simpson white Bronco day. I was very new on the air and every two minutes the story changed. It was awesome.

Favorite movie: Caddyshack and anything by John Hughes.

First job: Selling shoes at Hahn's at the Mentor Mall.

First concert: U2

#1 sports team: NL Diamondbacks. AL Cleveland Indians. Gotta love a team whose mascot is named Chief Wahoo.

Outside interests: Working out, cooking, traveling and reading a great book.
