Phoenix looking to sell or rent homes it owns

PHOENIX -- Phoenix wants to sell or rent the hundreds of homes it acquired over the years to help low-income families. Phoenix Housing Director Kim Dorney says the goal is to sell 10 homes this year.

Dorney tells The Arizona Republic the city is considering a marketing effort to spread the news about the city-owned homes.

Phoenix is already working with tenants living in public- housing programs whose incomes may qualify them to buy one of the houses.

Public records obtained by The Republic shows the city owns 435 single-family homes.

Phoenix housing officials said the city had purchased some of the homes in the 1990s as part of a federal housing program.
