TUCSON, Ariz. -- The National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona has announced that former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been named to its National Board of Advisers.
Board officials made the announcement Tuesday.
The institute is a nonpartisan center for the research and advocacy of civility in public discourse.
Chaired by former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, the institute engages in initiatives to advance understanding of civil discourse among elected officials and candidates running for public office and works to promote awareness of the importance of civil discourse to democracy and effective government.
Giffords joins other prominent people on the National Board of Advisers including retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former Arizona congressman Jim Kolbe and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
