PHOENIX -- Five-year-old Jhessye Shockley has been missing since October and the Glendale police department has focused most of their investigation on her mother, Jerice Hunter.
Hunter's attorney, Scott Maasen, says Jerice feels mistreated and says the media has focused this case on her past mistakes rather than the importance of finding Jhessye.
"They looked at her past and said, because of her past, she is a bad person and had something to do with this," Maasen said.
Police spoke with Hunter's other children during the investigation, who said Jhessye was locked in a closet and didn't appear to be alive. However, Hunter's attorney says there is no proof.
"There hasn't been a shred of evidence or a shred of proof showing Miss Hunter is connected to this disappearance," Maasen said.
Glendale police are planning to start searching for the body of Jhessye Shockley on February 6 in Mobile; a landfill located south of the Valley.
The department is currently in the final stages of obtaining the necessary equipment, as well as scheduling, training, and medically screening personnel.
They have said they are confident that Jhessye's body is in the landfill. The search could last several weeks as personnel will be sifting through approximately 6,000 tons of trash. Hunter's attorney says the search should have begun months ago.
